Pocket Cowboys

Walking down Shandwick Place last Friday I bumbed into an old friend of mine, we chatted and it turned out he was heading to the casino, I suppose I didnt really take too much convincing especially after leaving Las Vagas $400 up in January... nae bad!

So I thought, yeah cool, I'm up for getting a bit more free money.

£30 later I was working out the exchange rate for dollars into pounds, making sure I was still 'up' over all. I was, so relaxed again. After a while in the windowless world of gambling I discovered that a Pot Limit Texas Hold 'Em poker tournament was to commence within the hour. A £10 buy-in with a final prize of some £500 or so... what a breeze.

I am after all the man who broke the back of mighty Las Vagas, managing to leave the clutches of the shifty eyed pit bosses with $400 nabbed out their purse. Ha, some back room low key poker game with a bunch of taxi drivers is no problem.

Things started off well, the table I was on soon realised I was a force to be reckoned with and I doubled my stack within 15 minutes. Just as I was in the zone a tap on my shoulder broke my concentration and as soon as it did I knew that I will never regain such composure in all my life, "Excuse me sir, are you playing big blind this hand?" the barmaid imported from eastern Europe asks. It transpires that I must relocate my poker powers to another table to fill gaps from early knockouts.

Anyway, after a few bluffs and pretty aggressive play I, your humble narrator, came out with some 4500 chips, nae bad from a 600 starter stack. So I was looking in good condition when play was moved to the final 3 tables, I had more chips than most on the table and was feeling confident. Then it happened. I'm afraid this is where things take a turn for the worst.

The hand was dealt. I, under the cover of a strategically cupped hand, spied the kind of cards that die hard poker freaks blow up to poster size and pin on the back of the bathroom door. Hot damn! A pair of pocket cowboys. I began exercising my thoughts towards how to slow play them and blow all these small fry out of the shark pool.

The betting came around and some joker had layed down 2000 chips just on his 2 blind cards, I figured that it was some guy trying to sweep up the blinds and therefore cling onto the dream of the cash prize for a few hands more... so I re-raised. Not expecting a call, I was somewhat surprised that two players not only called but reraised and went all in. Unfortunately I had so much in already that I had to call, and anyway I had the best hand right?

So what are the chances of this; the guy to my immediate left flipped his cards to reveal a pair of Queens, I thought ha, not this time matey. The the guy to his left flipped over the deafening blow... a pair of bullets. I thought well geez, he's got me. On the flop however falls 2, 10, Queen. So after all that the lowest pair nabs it and knocks both me and the bullet man out. Gutted.
